Community Liaisons successful kick-off on Jan. 20

Building CommunityOver 25 residents came out on Jan. 20, 2016 to hear about the new Community Liaisons initiative for Ward 2. If you missed the meeting and would like to learn about the initiative, have a look at the PowerPoint, meeting notes and introductory letter.

Two initiatives that were shared on Jan. 20 were Jane’s Walk and the City’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge. Upcoming public meetings are being held for residents to learn more about these initiatives.

Jane’s Walk

What is a Jane’s Walk and who is Jane Jacobs? Watch the 3 minute video to learn more.

  • Jane’s Walks are free, locally organized walking tours, in which people get together to discuss, explore and celebrate their neighbourhoods.
  • Jane’s Walk is meant to be a walking conversation. Leaders share their knowledge, but also encourage discussion and participation among the walkers.
  • A Jane’s Walk can focus on almost any aspect of a neighbourhood, and on almost any topic you can think of. Walks can be serious or funny, informative or exploratory; they can look at the history of a place, or at what’s happening there right now.
  • Anyone can lead a walk — because everyone is an expert on the place where they live!
  • Jane’s Walks can also be bike rides.

Healthy Kids Community Challenge

Burlington is one of 45 communities across Ontario taking part in Ontario’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge. The Healthy Kids Community Challenge unites communities with a common goal: promoting children’s health through physical activity and healthy eating.

About every nine months, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will launch a new theme related to physical activity or healthy eating; two protective factors associated with healthy weights in children.  Communities will rally around the theme and work with partners in many sectors developing programs, policies and initiatives that promote and enable healthy behaviors. Our community will be developing action plans that strive for that goal while meeting local needs.

Join in the conversation at the community meeting (child care is available):

Date: Thursday, February 11, 2016
Time: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Location: St. Christopher’s Church, 662 Guelph Line
RSVP: Rishia Burke, or 905-632-1975
