The ad hoc citizen’s committee was formally incorporated through the Ontario Historical Society as the Friends of Freeman Station

The ad hoc citizen’s committee struck to save the historic Freeman Station has achieved a significant milestone. The group has been formally incorporated through the Ontario Historical Society as the Friends of Freeman Station with a board, bylaws and constitution.

The president of the board is Les Armstrong, president of the Burlington Historical Society. Secretary is Pam Freeman, descendant of the Freeman family after whom the station is named. Other members of the board include citizen representatives with expertise in restoration, fundraising, communications and heritage preservation.

Councillor Blair Lancaster and myself are resources to the board, but not formal members, making this truly a community-led effort.

With the incorporation, the next step is for Friends of Freeman Station to seek charitable status through the federal government so that it can begin raising funds and issuing receipts for donations of money, goods and services. As a charity, the Friends can also apply for a number of heritage and other grants to help with the restoration and ongoing operation of the station.

Resident participation in this effort is welcome. Please join us at our next public meetings March 10 and 31.
