Have your say on acquisition of beach homes: take survey; fill out petition; watch video

Is the residential community near Beachway Park compatible with the long-term vision for the park? The Burlington Waterfront Committee has prepared a survey to seek broad community input on whether the Beachway residential community should remain.

Take the survey here:

The Burlington Waterfront Committee is composed of volunteers from across the city whose goal is to provide city-wide input on waterfront issues. Members are continuing the work of the now-sunset Waterfront Access & Protection Advisory Committee (WAPAC) of council, with assistance from my office. About half of Burlington Waterfront Committee members were members of WAPAC. None of the committee members live or own property in Beachway Park.

The BWC supports the residential community along Beachway Park.

Petition

The residents who live along Lakeshore Road near Beachway Park have started a petition to Let them Stay in their homes, and seeking an end to the acquisition policy. Sign the petition here.

Video: Burlington Beach residents talk about why they want to stay

Jim and Marie Milner have lived on Burlington Beach for more than 70 years. They grew up here, got married and raised kids here, have seen storms come and go (with no flood damage), and lived here long before the acquisition policy was developed to acquire the homes for parkland. The residential community has been in the area for more than 100 years.

I spoke to the Milners and recorded their story to share with the public and decision-makers to provide a human face and eyewitness history on this issue. In the attached video, the Milners share their memories of the beach as a vibrant community, eyewitness accounts of storms, and hopes for the future – to stay in their home.
