Robert Bateman’s Painting for BAC’s Art Auction Feb. 7
Here’s just one of the many paintings that will be auctioned as part of the Burlington Art Centre Art Auction Feb. 7.
Robert Bateman’s Coyote at Mount Nemo, oil on board, 12 x 17
Here’s what Bob had to say about the inspiration for this painting:
For as long as I can remember, what really mattered to me has always been quality of life. I wanted to live surrounded by nature but within striking distance of a city. The finest natural countryside near my home town Toronto was the Niagara Escarpment. That is partly why I took a teaching job at Nelson High School in Burlington in 1958. I found a perfect spot with a woods and stream and a view of the slopes west of Mt. Nemo. This became my stomping ground for my family and my students. I saw this view of Mt. Nemo in November 2013 while leading a group of students from Robert Bateman High School (formerly Lord Elgin). I imagined the coyote because it is one animal that has been on the increase in southern Ontario. Many creatures are becoming disturbingly scarce, such as song birds but some are more abundant than any time in ancient history, such as white-tailed deer, racoons and coyotes.
