Butcher, fruit, dairy market to open at Brant/Lakeshore
Residents will soon be able to shop for fresh local meat, cheese and produce at the Brant Street Butcher, opening September 2014 in the former Girgenti building at the corner of Brant and Lakeshore.
Proprietor Ellen McWhinnie’s passion is to promote locally grown foods. She has over 30 years experience in the food industry.
Plans for this full service butcher include a dedicated focus on local products: meats, fruits & vegetables, dairy and cheese, baked goods. There are also plans for a store-in-store program, home delivery, online ordering and an innovative kitchen.

My Take: I’m thrilled with this addition to our downtown – something residents have requested for some time. It’s great to see new businesses choosing downtown – welcome!! – and there are more to come. Stay tuned!

Fantastic news with the opening of the Brant Street Butcher….would love to see a pet groomer in the downtown core. Living in a senior’s building downtown, it would be great to be able to walk to such places. Welcome to our neighbourhood!

I see Judy suggested a hardware store as well I second that. I would also suggest an affordably priced clothing store for women and…..that sell t-shirts, socks, lingerie, skinny jeans, flip flops, sandals, belts, purses, etc. It is not often many of us require formal wear. Glynis adds it would be another step closer to not have to drive everywhere to shop for all of life’s necessities I so agree. For many of us, it means the handi van or a taxi for some the city bus and there are so many logistical problems with that regarding where to get the bus, destination required and cost and how many places can be done in a day and usually must be stretched out over weeks to do what used to be done in a day at the mall. Bringing all of the needed and wanted stores will bring the “Feet On The Street” for sure, I can’t wait for that.

What a wonderful idea to have such a store in our downtown. We have needed such a store for quite sometime that allows for more choices than currently exist. I agree with Penny above in that I hope the pricing is such that all residents can shop there. I see also that there will be home delivery boy what a great and timely idea for so many seniors who have lost the taxi scrip program and must depend on the handi van to get out. The difficulty is that the handi van driver and rightfully so cannot assist the shopper in with the groceries. What is the store in store program? Also it would be helpful if phone in orders could be made as not everyone has a computer or can navigate one. I would like to know more. As well it will be nice to be able to buy meat according to the amount needed for one’s household. For eg. a pkg of 12 is too much if the only freezer is the one in the refrigerator. Years ago the IGA packaged meats in ones or twos this could be done for all foods. This will be a terrific addition to downtown Burlington and I cannot wait to shop there. When does it open?

Marianne, Love the idea of having this type of store on Brant Street. It will make shopping really convenient for those of us living in the core. It is my hope that the pricing will allow ALL residents to be able to make use of this convenience.

What a wonderful addition to the stores on Brant Street and for all of those that shop or live on Brant Street. I could not personally be happier!
