Students protesting the possible closure of their downtown Burlington high school garnered some attention at last weekend’s Burlington Santa Claus Parade — including that of the city’s mayor.
My Take: Proud of our local students who got involved in raising awareness of what’s happening in our downtown community with parade float for Central HIgh School. Said student organizer Shasni Pathirana: “If we don’t speak up and voice our opinions, the only question we have to ask ourselves is, ‘If not now, when? If not us, who?” Exactly. Welcome, young people, to democracy.

What a dilemma for the government! How to respond to demonstrators of this age, who rightly have wondered why Central is being considered for closure.
A community school, in a community no less.
Like minded families have moved here to live in a neighbourhood where most kids can grow up happy.
I do agree with Walter, but unfortunately older citizen usually conjures up an image of an old fool.
Welcome to Democracy! more like hope you will be able to salvage some by the time your old enough.
I recommend these protestors lobby there parents into action, after all they are the ones with the vote, but don’t let your parents take over the fight either, because if you leave it up to them it will never get done, trust me.
Hook up with all the local community associations, they will be sympathetic to your cause.

It’s great to see our young people standing up for what they believe. This should be an example for most of older citizens, getting involved is contributing to the democratic process, we don’t have to agree but we can respect others opinions. We need our young to have a conscience and their voices are very important.

I agree with you being proud of these kids stepping up and voicing what they believe in. They too can “do something”!
Residents who are concerned are acting like sheep, as our schools are led to slaughter. I’m ashamed for them.
City rules – like we need them? – on this will never stop, nor should they ever stop, such spontaneous activism by the young.
It’s only the sheep that will follow orders.
