Our new hospital is here, opening Aug. 21

The new Michael Lee-Chin & Family patient tower at Joseph Brant Hospital will be opening Aug. 21.

The new seven storey state-of-art Patient Tower combines technology, open spaces, and a calming environment to encourage health and healing. It features:

• A covered foot bridge connecting the parking garage with the Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower.
• A new Emergency Department (ED)
• 172 acute inpatient beds
• 9 new Operating Rooms (OR) and a new post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU)
• Expanded Diagnostic Imaging (DI) department and associated services
• Expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services
• Expanded Cancer Clinic
• Expanded Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Renovated Special Care Nursery, level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Expanded and modernized laboratory
• 70 per cent single-patient rooms across the hospital

Please note that patient visitation will be limited Aug. 20 to allow staff to complete the patient move. On that date, the emergency will also move to the Lakeshore Rd entrance.

The hospital’s address will change effective Aug. 20 to 1245 Lakeshore Road, where the new Main Entrance and ED entrance will be located. The telephone number will remain the same 905-632-3737.

Programs, Services & Locations

Many Programs & Services will be relocating to the new Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower. Patients impacted by these moves will be notified in advance of opening day.

Detailed floor-level maps have been developed to help patients and visitors find their way.

Continued Renovations

After the new Patient Tower opens, renovations to the existing building will continue through 2018. Additional moves are planned for September 4, 2017 to allow for additional renovation work. The moves will impact some patients and clinics in the existing hospital. Renovation information will be posted to individual program and service pages.

My Take:

This is great news for our community. The expanded and improved facilities will improve the health and wellbeing of residents for decades to come. The community truly came together to make this happen, with the foundation closing in on raising $60 million from hundreds of donors, and the city matching that contribution with a special levy raising $60 million. Congratulations to donors, hospital staff, volunteers, the hospital board of directors (on which I served for seven years) and the hospital foundation board of directors, past and present, who all helped to make this happen.
